Mobile Home Ductwork Repair: Keep Your Home Warm This Winter

Use the mastic sealant for minor repairs where there are any loose links in the mobile home ductwork. Gloves are essential for protecting you from dirt and other materials while also preventing any injuries during the repairs. The aluminum foil is used to seal the leaking ductwork in your mobile home. If something is restricting the airflow in the duct system, then the flexible pipes can collapse. In this case, when the air in the ductwork system flows through the system, some rooms in the mobile home can either get too much or too little hot or cool air.

If your duct is made like this one and the inner lining fails you could get pieces of insulation blown loose. You might be able to pry up the duct cover and set a mirror at an angle on the bottom. With a bright light that would let you look down the inside of the duct. If that doesn’t work you will have to open the duct at some point and see what you can find. If so where can we get a new duct in Tucson AZ. What if you took the register covers off and dropped a really bright light into one of them.

Depending on its size and on its location within the furnace cabinet, the connector can draw a substantial amount of fresh crawlspace air into the mobile home. The decision to seal the connectors off is based upon the overall tightness of the home (if the house is really tight, don't fix it). Even if connectors function as makeup air inlets, the crawl space is probably not the best source of makeup air.

6-8 hours is probably about the right length of time to let things thaw out. If you’re installing a flex duct for the first time, you need to create a hole on the plenum first and install a collar of matching size first. Afterward, you’ll connect the duct to the collar. So if the retrofit produces a reduction in the supply leakage fraction from 10% to 5%, the retrofit should provide an overall benefit to the homeowner of 5%. It is one of those items that may be installed by the factory, the dealer or the setup crew.

Supporting straps have to be 4 feet or closer to each other. This leaves no portion of the duct unsupported, which might eventually bend and touch the ground. Because if the flex gets in touch with the ground, rodents, insects, dust, debris, and dozens of other unexpected things will find their way into the ducting and eventually your house. Now, unroll the outer jacket, and ensure that you’re bringing out the inner jacket with it. Cover the inner line with the insulation and outer jacket properly. Take a duct knife and cut through the perimeter of the duct, and make sure the cut is all the way through the inner liner.

I mean, if this happen to go off I can’t find a reason why. Using metal straps, use sheet metal screws to secure it. This is important because the straps won’t be able to slip between the spiral metal wires.

Step 2: Cut It At The Right Place in The Right Way

If you’re sweating in one room and freezing in another, it’s most likely a sign your ductwork needs repair. Phil shows you exactly how to measure the cross over ductwork for your double-wide mobile home. We are having duct work issues with our double wide. Air blows strong in master bath and in back bedroom, both on the side with the ac/ heater.

It will blow somewhat OK for 6-8 hours then not well at all. We turn the unit off for several hours, then the air will flow again, but not as well as it should. The duct is laying on the ground- as far as we know it always has. Applying diagnostically based duct-sealing techniques to mobile homes and manufactured homes has produced some interesting findings and creative solutions to duct leakage problems.

Post all other heating and cooling questions here. I have to think the only reason for the flex tube is cost. Installing a flex tube does not require any cutting, measuring, or other skills so it can be done by the lowest paid guy on the installation crew.

You want to have a little more than what you need. You got quick connect, which is kind of odd. You should be able to cut off the extra length and re-attach it. I think some plumbers tape every couple of feet would hold it up off the ground. A/C repair is one of my weak points since I live in New Mexico where evaporative coolers are more popular.

Step 1: Get The Right Size Flex Duct for Mobile Home

You must join more than one flex duct together if you need longer flex ducting. In multi-section manufactured home units, there are two trunk ducts across the length of each unit. And a flex duct is used as a crossover that connects the trunks. As Greg mentioned - my flex duct (one 12" run to each half of a DW) - was pretty much just left laying on the ground. And, after they chewed up the flex - they made their way through the 35ft long "plenums" that run the entire length of the house - one for each half. Come winter time - my electric bill was hitting $600.

If it’s a plenum, you need to create a hole first as per the duct size. You’ll need a sheet metal home cutter for this. Mostly, the metal trunk duct comes pre-built from the factory and connects to the mobile home HVAC pretty easily. But for that crossover flex duct, you need to install or replace it manually. Finding fast, reliable testing methods can make duct sealing much more cost-effective. Completing mobile home ductwork repair is only one way of getting your home ready for winter.

Don’t let this mild weather slip away without making the necessary repairs to keep your home warm and dry this winter. Some major issues in older mobile homes are caused by metallic materials in the ductwork. These old metal pipes are a perfect breeding grounds for mildew, viruses, and mold. Not only can this expose you to harmful bacteria, it can also cause ducts to rust. Eventually, the rust will perforate pipes and cause them to function inefficiently.

I would try contacting a hvac professional and see if they can get things correctly sized. I'm a recent owner of a DW with an airflow issue on one side of my house . This is where the conditioning unit was wiring to it and right here is where it crosses over to. Evidently this one, although usual it has two crossovers, one over there, they might have had an additional, I don’t see the other. Problem is one bedroom stays warm at one end and the other end you freeze. Crawl under the house and look for a large plastic tube going from one side to the other.
